The staff writes, “An intimate urban-sophisticated restaurant that is refined both in ambiance and menu, Pomona Bistro & Wine Bar is a favorite with local gourmands and visiting culinary adventure-seekers. Chef/owners Ryan Boeve and Arthur Lopes (see also Lila) strike a balance between global and local dishes and include all the niceties, like a lavish charcuterie board, cheese course and glamorous desserts. We Are 2017 Golden Spoon Winners

We are so honored to share the news that we’ve been awarded a Golden Spoon Award for New American Cuisine in Sarasota. This award is the oldest and most coveted dining award in the state and has been around for 40 years. The awards were originally created to help traveling executives find great local restaurants for dining. Not just anyone with hype or good food can be awarded a Golden Spoon, only those restaurants that utilize top ingredients sourced carefully and prepared with imagination and authenticity from entrees to vegetables and breads are chosen.

Usually the award is given to fine dining restaurants that have been in business for at least three years. We won the Golden Spoon for Best New Restaurant in 2011, and were honored to be awarded last year, but we never imagined we’d win another award! This is such a huge honor and we are so grateful! Thanks so much to our hard-working staff who always put our customers first and thank you to Chris Sherman!

Gluten Free Baking Week

Did you know that National Gluten Free Baking week always falls the week before Christmas? The week aims to bring awareness to gluten sensitivity, intolerance, and celiac disease which can make the holidays especially painful for some who cannot tolerate wheat products, which are generally found in Christmas cookies, breads, and other favorite holiday dishes. Our master baker and co-owner, Arthur Lopes, was inspired by this exact dilemma saying, “Children are one of my greatest passions, which is why I’ve become so involved with Visible Man Academy. Seeing children with this allergy who couldn’t enjoy a birthday cake really broke my heart and led me to begin experimenting with alternative flour sources like spelt and almond flour in my baking.”

Other popular flours that bakers may be interested in trying include: sweet potato flour, chick pea flour, peanut flour, and coconut flour. If you are hoping to start experimenting with Gluten-Free Baking,  Arthur advises, “start with making small adjustments to favorite recipes that you are already familiar with. Try finding flour that complements the flavor of the other ingredients. For example, almond flour works really well for cookies.”

Its the experimenting that makes the best creations, “I love the creative challenge of trying different flours and seeing how the texture or flavor affects the dish. The various flours can cook differently and discovering the best combinations is all a part of the fun.”

Owners Ryan and Arthur – Food Fighters Making a Difference in Our Community

Recently, Sarasota Magazine writer, Andrew Theophilopoulous, shared an article titled, “5 “Food Fighters” Who are Making a Difference in Our Community.” Amongst other amazing people working in our community, including our friend and supplier Christa Leonard from Geraldson Community Farms, he named owners of Lila Ryan Boeve and Arthur Lopes.

He writes, “Creativity is the hallmark of the longtime business partners, whose Pomona Bistro & Wine Bar in the Rosemary District has won a foodie following since it opened in 2011. At Lila, the menu will change as much as every other day, depending on what regional organic farmers like Aloe Organics and Geraldson Community Farm and meat purveyors like Grove Ladder Farm and Sarasota Beef Company deliver to the back door. The two prioritize organic above local, turning to outside organic purveyors when nearby farms can’t supply organic produce.”

Ryan and Arthur also recently were named as honorable mentions in SRQ Magazine’s Culinary Newsmakers of the Year for their successful opening of Lila and continued success with Pomona Bistro.
